Organic Chemistry: The Alcohols

Alcohol is one of the main components of many beverages. It has many side effects when taken irresponsibly. This has lead many governments to restrict the age group for drinking anything with ethanol (CH3CH2OH).

The alcohol functional group is R — OH. Where R represents an alkyl group made up of carbon and hydrogen. We name them according to the number of carbon atoms it has (same prefixes as always) and depending on where the
— OH molecule appears.

Examples:
- 1-methanol: CH3OH
- 1-ethanol: CH3CH2OH
- 1-propanol: CH3CH2CH2OH
- 2-propanol: CH3CH2CH3 (CH2-OH) (simplest branched isomer)
